Sermon Prep (Read Philippians 1:27-30)
I was following on my phone the opening game of the Kentucky Wildcats this week and let’s just say that the first half wasn’t as impressive as many thought it should be. They still won by a lot, but they didn’t look as good as they should have. In one of my many groups that I belong to where we all whine, wail, and moan all things Kentucky basketball, someone made a good point. He said, “Is this what 22 million dollars in NIL money looks like? These boys need to have their play match their pay” Their play needs to match their pay. (And yes, we are spending $22 million on the players this season…so we better get championship #9!)
Paul hints at something similar for us. As Christians, we have been redeemed at a great price. Not with silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ. We have been saved by grace at no cost to us but the highest cost to Christ. Jesus has blessed us with so many great things and what is our response to this? How do we live in light of all that has been done in us and for us? Paul reminds us in these verses, “Live a life worthy of the Gospel”. There is so much in these few verses. Paul speaks about our citizenship in heaven (yes, it’s there…we will talk about it on Sunday), what it means to live a worthy life, and how that is reflected not simply in our behavior but in our relationships with other believers and in how we endure hardships.
As you study these verses, think about how your life reflects on the Gospel. If someone were to watch you all week to see the impact that Jesus has on your life, what would they see? How do you treat others, how do you glorify God in your life? Also, think about the difference between living a life worthy of the Gospel and the idea of being worthy of the Gospel. Why is there a big difference between the two and why does it matter? One more thing, the idea of living worthy may lead some to feel as if they are not living up to a standard and they will feel discouraged. How does the Gospel of grace help us with this while still encouraging us to grow in our likeness of Christ?
Some other verses to help prepare you for Sunday: Ac 23:1. Ep 4:1. Col 1:10. 1 Th 2:11, 12. 4:1. Ti 2:10. 2 Pet 1:4-9. 3:11, 14. Ro 1:9, 16. 15:16, +19, 29. 2 Co 4:4. 9:13. Ga 1:7. Ph 2:12, 24. Updates, Thoughts and More
The Lord’s Acre is upon us. The doors will open this Saturday at 10 am and we will have lots of great things going on. You can shop for items by our wonderful stitching angels, get some baked goods, look at our many silent auction items and then place your bids. Lunch will be served at noon and then the live auction will begin at 12:45. You can go on our website (Actonmethodist.com) and see all the items we have available. There will be a kid’s area and a nursery available. Come and have fun with us.
This Thanksgiving, we will once again be hosting a meal at the church. If you would like more information on this and to sign up, please call the church office.
As many of you know, the government is having a hard time getting along and because of this many have lost their snap benefits. This means that there are many families going hungry right now in our communities. Our local food pantries are overwhelmed due to the high demand. As a church, we are looking at ways we can help those families who are struggling. We will have more suggestions in the coming days, but for now one way you can help is to donate these three items: Peanut Butter, Tuna, and Canned Chicken. The food banks have little or no protein and this will help fill that need. You can bring these to the church beginning this Sunday. Thank you for caring for those in our community who are hurting.
Let’s talk about college football. First, did you see where Kentucky won last weekend? Miracles happen!!! Now for my picks: The only games that may be competitive is LSU and Bama, but I see Bama destroying LSU because LSU just fired the coach and the players just don’t care that much (sadly). Texas A&M better watch out against Missouri. Missouri is a tough team and I think A&M will win but it will be close. Florida and Kentucky will be a tough one to watch. When you watch it, count how many penalties each team will be guilty of. I put the over/under at 25.
For the NFL, there just isn’t a lot of great games. This is the weekend for you to go to Costco instead of sitting in your recliner. The best game would be Los Angelas and Pittsburgh. I think Pitt wins. Also, even though Dallas has a bye, they will still find a way to lose the game.

Joke of the Week
A boy was watching his father, a pastor, write a sermon. “How do you know what to say?” he asked. “Why, God tells me.” “Oh, then why do you keep crossing things out?”
Memory Verse of the Week
“Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in one spirit, contending as one man for the faith of the gospel.”
~Philippians 1:27 (NIV84)
Quote of the Week
“To become like Christ is the only thing in the world worth caring for, the thing before which every ambition of man is folly and all lower achievement vain.”
~Henry Drummond
