Sermon Prep (Read John 8:12-20)

The glory of God left the Temple. If you go back to the book of Ezekiel, the prophet has a vision where he sees the glory of God up and leaves the Temple. The people of Israel and Judah had sinned, and after ignoring all the prophetic warnings, the people still would not heed the call to return to God. So, Ezekiel sees the glory of God rise up from the Temple and then exit out the East gate and then disappear. The light had departed. When Jesus says, “He is the light of the world”, He makes this claim during the Feast of Tabernacles. The people would celebrate the Exodus story in the wilderness by living in tents, by pouring water on the ground, and one of the biggest things was lighting a huge candelabra in front of the temple to show the light of the Lord (by the way, when our acolytes come in on Sunday morning to light the candles, they are reminding us that Jesus is the Light and He is present with us). On the last day of the feast, the candelabra wasn’t lit. Each night it was lit up bright, but on this night, it was a reminder that the glory of God had departed, and the darkness remained. It is here, in front of this darkened candelabra that Jesus makes this claim, “I am the Light of the world. He who comes to me will never walk in darkness but have the light of life.” It is a one of the 7 “I AM” statements, and it is one that reminds us that God is light and the light has returned to awaken those walking in darkness to the salvation of our Lord.

What does it mean that Jesus is the light?  What does light accomplish and what does it represent? And Jesus then tells us that not only is He the light of the world, but He calls on us to reflect His light to this dark world. How do we do this?  We will look at this and so much more this Sunday.

Updates, Thoughts and More

  1. This Sunday is selection Sunday. I am still not sure how this goes in Texas, but in Kentucky this is about as close as you get to an unofficial holiday. Once the brackets come out, I always fill out two brackets. One will always have Kentucky winning the national championship because anything less than a national title is considered a disappointing season that warrants the discussion of a head coach firing and a complete overhaul of the roster. The other bracket will be one that is the more realistic version (with Kentucky still winning most of the games). I will have mine posted on my door on Monday morning and I encourage you to come and compare your brackets.

  2. Registration for our Upward is open.  Our first game will be April 11 and will go until May 16th. If you have any questions, please go to our website to find more information.

  3. The Easter season is often the time in the past when people would choose to be baptized or to reaffirm their baptism. If God has been moving in your heart to be baptized or to reaffirm your baptism, please give me a call and I would love to talk to you about it.

  4. Tuesday is St. Patrick’s Day. If you come to the church and you are not wearing green… we will show you grace and we won’t pinch you.
