Sermon Prep (Read 1 Corinthians 13:11-13)

Did you know that I got to meet Reba McEntire once? When I was a teenager, I had an unhealthy obsession with the little red head from Oklahoma. I had her posters plastered all over my walls, and I owned every tape cassette she ever put out. I was even an official Bonafide member of her fan club. One of the perks of being a member of her fan club was that I got a birthday card from Reba herself. It was signed by her and everything! (Now I know it was done by a machine…but still, it was from Reba to me). Then there was the major perk (with an additional cost), and that was that I got a VIP experience and I got a chance to go backstage at her concert and meet her. You talk about excitement! Wow. I was going to meet Reba McEntire.

When the day came, I put on my brand new, neon green, heavily starched Garth Brooks shirt and my finest pair of jeans. I had a speech prepared that ended in a marriage proposal. When I got to go backstage, I was disappointed to learn that it wasn’t just me and Reba, but me and Reba and all the other fans who paid the extra money to meet her. Also, we were told that we were not allowed to touch her (bummer!). I did get to ask a question of her, and so I told her my name (so technically…Reba knows who I am! I’m sure she remembers me). So at this point, I can tell you that I know Reba and I wouldn’t be lying. But do I really know her? I could tell you just about every little detail about her life, but my knowledge would be incomplete or maybe even inaccurate.

What I know of Reba is only just a glimpse of who she truly is. In fact, I later learned through others that Reba wears a wig (blasphemy!!!). So my knowledge of her is incomplete. But what if I knew that one day, I would see Reba one day face to face. Not only face to face, but she would bare her soul to me and reveal every thought and every aspect of her life to me. What if there was a day where not only would she know who I am, but I would know her fully. Oh, what a day!

As great as that is, we have something better. We know Jesus. And as much as we know today, we only know in part. And as much as we know about God’s love for us and the beauty of Jesus and the true extent of “Agape” love, Paul says that we are simply looking at it like a poor reflection. We can see bits and pieces, we can grasp the basic outline, but we can’t see clearly. Yet, one day we will. As you study our text this week, think about what that day will be like. One day you will see Jesus face to face. He knows you fully, but we will know Him fully. What will that look like to be perfected in love, to be fully loved and to truly experience the fullness of that love.

Also, there are some other things to think about with our text. What are some ways we act “in love” that show just how childish we are and where we need to grow up in our love? How do we put these childish ways behind us? Also, Paul says that there are three things that remain: Faith, Hope, and Love. Why is love considered the greatest? As we finish this chapter, what lessons on love do you take away from this? Remember, the context of this is how we relate to each other as church members, especially in regard to spiritual gifts.

Updates, Thoughts and More

  1. As most of you have heard by now, there was a travesty of injustice that occurred on Sunday here at the church.  My chili did not win the chili cook off.  However, I will not despair.  I will double my efforts, improve my recipe, and I will come back spicier and tastier than ever before.  Next year.  Yes, next year!  As far as the winners, the Bible Explorers had the most tickets and was considered the overall winner.  The Sojourners won the best decorating and the spiciest chili.  The Seekers class was voted to have the best tasting chili.  I, as pastor, was given an honorable mention…though I think it was more out of pity than anything else.

  2. We are entering into the season of Lent. Included in this email is our Lenten bible reading plan.  Most days are only a few verses, and it includes a focus for the day and a prayer focus.  I ask that you join with us in this reading plan as we journey toward the cross and the great news of Easter morning.

  3. Mission Fair. We will be having a mission fair on March 8 th .  You will have a chance to hear about all the great things that Acton Methodist Church is doing both globally and in our local community.  For more information, you can contact Doug Crumrine via email at doug.crumrine@gmail.com.

  4. Registration for our Upward is open. Our first game will be April 11 and will go until May 16th. If you have any questions, please go to our website to find more information.

  5. As a Kentucky Baseball fan, this has been a season of ups and downs… with more downs than ups. I am still convinced that this is a championship team and we will hit our peak come March. This may only be in my dreams, but dreams do come true.

Joke of the Week

A bartender notices that every evening, without fail, one of his patrons orders three beers.
After several weeks of noticing this pattern, the bartender asks the man why he always orders three beers.
The man says, “I have two brothers who have moved away to different countries. We promised each other that we would always order an extra two beers whenever we drank as a way of keeping up the family bond.”
Several weeks later, noticing that the man only ordered two beers, the bartender says, “Please accept my condolences on the death of one of your brothers. You know, the two beers and all…”
The man replies, “You’ll be happy to hear that my two brothers are alive and well. It’s just that I, myself, have decided to give up drinking for Lent.”

Memory Verse of the Week

“And now these three remain: Faith, Hope and Love. But the greatest of these is love.”

~1 Corinthians 13:13 (NIV84)

Quote of the Week

“Faith will become sight, and hope will be fulfilled — but love will remain. Love is the greatest because it is the very life of God shared with us.”

~Unkown
